Q. Washington (CNN) -- Congress is looking into allegations that National Security Agency linguists have been eavesdropping on Americans abroad. The congressional oversight committees said Thursday that the Americans targeted included military officers in Iraq who called friends and family in the United States. The allegations were made by two former military intercept operators on a television news report Thursday evening. A terrorist surveillance program instituted by the Bush administration allows the intelligence community to monitor phone calls between the United States and overseas without a court order -- as long as one party to the call is a terror suspect. A. "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor security." - Ben Franklin FYI, most phone calls back to the States by GIs are NOT made on official government phones, but on PUBLIC phones set up by the local civilian phone companies in the area. If the local phone company does not have the infrastructure then private companies such as AT&T or Kuwait Telephone are brought in to set up the lines. Ever notice those campaigns to get calling cards to the GIs overseas so that they can call back home? Now you know why and how it's done. Bush has a lot of 'splainin' to do on this one!
