A president is a leader of an organization, company, trade union, university, or country.

Etymologically, a president is one who presides, who sits in leadership (from Latin pre- "before" + sedere "to sit"; giving the term praeses). Originally, the term referred to the presiding officer of a ceremony or meeting (i.e., chairman), but today it most commonly refers to an official. Among other things, president today is a common title for the heads of state of most republics, whether popularly elected, chosen by the legislature or by a special electoral college. It is also often adopted by dictators.

Can a president be convicted of a crime as president, once he leaves office?
Q. If it was found out that President Bush committed crimes (for argument sake, let's say war crimes) during his presidency, can he be convicted after the fact? Is there a statue of limitations for the President? How long before he has immunity from this?

A. yes.. but you'd have to find a cop that wasnt an accomplice.. or one that wasnt as crooked as bush.. to arrest him.. then a court not as corrupt as bush to convict him.. so .. you can forget about it.. the first test of obama will be the bush criminal enterprise issue that hijacked our govt.. and drove it into ruin.. murder torture kidnapping agressive war.. attacking and destroying much of the us constitution.. using lies to fraud the people. no bid contracts to their friends .. nothing more than money laundering.. except that it alsto cost close to a million lives. i dont know of any statute of limitations on treason.. torture.. murder.. kidnapping.. treason.. these are all capitol crimes i think. unfortunatly i think obama will… [cont.]

Q. Can a sitting President do this? Can he pardon himself and his top people from charges not yet even laid yet? For example, could a president pardon himself and his cabinet for any charges that could ever come about for specific activities they were involved in during their time in office? Even though it ma not be viewed as an actual offense for years afterward?

A. I doubt it, but if there's a way, Bush & Cheney will find it . . . they'd better find it!

How come a president can invade and occupy a foreign country without a formal declaration of war?
Q. Isn't this the reason congress has the power to declare war, not the president? What happened to checks and balances? But more importantly, do you think Obama will be more responsible in this respect? I would love to have a president who acted not only by the letter of the Constitution, but also the intended spirit of the Constitution.

A. Because the War Powers Act gives him that power.
